Swinger (or ‘The Lifestyle’): The adventurous sexual practices of couples and singles that enjoy recreational sex with other consenting adults. Swingers engage in multiple sexual or romantic relationships simultaneously with the consent and knowledge of all parties, as opposed to unethical non-monogamy, aka cheating. Also know as ethical non-monogamy or consensual non-monogamy.

BDSM: A variety of often erotic practices or roleplaying involving bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, sadomasochism, and other related interpersonal dynamics.  Activities and relationships in BDSM are often characterized by the participants’ taking on roles that are complementary and involve inequality of power; thus, the idea of informed consent of both the partners is essential. The terms:

B/D (Bondage and Discipline), D/S (Dominance and submission), and S/M (Sadism and Masochism). BDSM is now used as a catch-all phrase covering a wide range of activities, forms of interpersonal relationships, and distinct subcultures. 

Bare back: Sex without a condom.

Bull: A well-endowed man who is interested in casual sex.

Compersion: The opposite of jealousy, compersion is the feeling of experiencing joy because your partner is experiencing joy. 

Ethical Non-monogamy or Consensual Non-monogamy: The practice of engaging in multiple sexual and/or romantic relationships simultaneously with the consent and knowledge of all parties, as opposed to unethical non-monogamy, aka cheating. This is generally regarded as an umbrella term that includes polyamory, open relationships, swinging, solo poly, relationship anarchy, and poly-fi relationships.

Friends with benefits or FWB: A type of swinging where couples seek relationships with other couples that involve more than sex.

Full swap: Sex play that involves penetrative sex. (see Soft swap below)

Hall pass: Having permission to play without your partner.

House party: A swinging party usually at someone’s home.

Meet & Greet: An event to meet other swingers.

Nudist adventure: A code word for the lifestyle.

Off premise: When sexual activities take place in a location other than the event, such as hotel rooms.

On premise: Sexual activities happen at the event.

Polyamory: The practice of engaging in multiple romantic relationships simultaneously with the consent and knowledge of all parties. Poly means many, and amory means love, so this type of ethical non-monogamy usually focuses on having multiple loving relationships, which may or may not include sexual activity.

Rope Bunny: A person who enjoys being restrained, tied up, and/or immoble during sexual intercourse; usually a submissive partner.

Same room: Full swap in the same room.

Soft swap: A form of sex play that involves any sexual activity other than penetrative sex. Soft swap play includes kissing, touching and oral sex. (See Full swap above)

Tri-sexual: Someone who will try anything once.

Vanilla: Is sexual behavior that is within the range of normality for a culture or subculture, and typically involves sex which does not include elements of BDSM, kink, or fetishism,  “vanilla sex” derives from the use of vanilla extract as the basic flavoring for ice cream, and by extension, meaning plain or conventional.  What is regarded as conventional sex depends on cultural and subcultural norms. 

Unicorn: A woman who dates or seeks out play experiences with couples.
